Many women who’ve had miscarriages suffer alone.
Even though they just lost their baby, some feel guilty for grieving so deeply.
Some ask themselves, shouldn’t I be over it by now? Why does everybody act like it’s nothing? Am I the only one who feels this way after losing a baby?
Some women may even take on blame, accusing themselves of doing something that might have hurt the baby. Was it that one cup of coffee? My higher stress levels? Is there something wrong with me?
Losing someone who you didn’t even fully meet is difficult. It’s made even harder by the fact that nobody seems to talk about miscarriages. And, when they do, they’re often shamed or told to get over it.
It’s true that miscarriages are common. You may have heard the statistic that about half of pregnancies end in miscarriage. Most often, these losses happen before a woman even knows she’s pregnant. For women who know they’re expecting, miscarriage affects between 10 to 15% of pregnancies.
Despite that many women experience it, it’s often still considered a taboo topic. This leads us to believe that others aren’t impacted by miscarriages like we are—and that something is wrong with us because of it.
Although it’s true that grief affects everyone differently, many women go through emotional turmoil after the loss of a baby. Reading about their stories won’t lessen your loss, but it may help you feel less alone in your struggles.
10 Celebrities Who Have Had Miscarriages
These celebrity miscarriage stories show that it’s normal to be deeply affected by the loss of a baby before birth.
#1 Chrissy Teigen
Model Chrissy Teigen is first on our list because she shared her story on social media, fought back at online trolls and continued sharing updates to help women in similar situations. Chrissy has famously talked about similar stories before, describing her journey through IVF and postpartum depression.
This time, she’d been updating her fans on her difficult third pregnancy and shared in September 2020 that it had landed her in the hospital. In a raw photo of her crying on a hospital bed, Chrissy shared that doctors weren’t able to stop the bleeding and, despite blood transfusions, the baby passed. She added that although she hadn’t named her kids before delivery, she started calling this one Jack.
“To our Jack – I’m so sorry that the first few moments of your life were met with so many complications, that we couldn’t give you the home you needed to survive.”
She ended her post with a line so relatable to couples who’ve experienced a loss: “On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it.”
Later she added another relatable thought: “Driving home from the hospital with no baby. How can this be real.”

In 2018, the former First Lady wrote about her experience with miscarriage. She revealed that she felt like she failed because she didn’t know how common losses were since nobody talks about them.
“We sit in our own pain, thinking that somehow we’re broken,” she wrote.
She added that not talking about it is a disservice to others struggling: “I think it’s the worst thing that we do to each other as women, not share the truth about our bodies and how they work, and how they don’t work.”
#3 Pink
Even a tough woman like Pink feels a sense of grief after a miscarriage.
In 2019, she revealed she had so many miscarriages she thought her body was broken. Prior to that, in 2010, she shared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that she delayed announcing her pregnancy because of her previous miscarriages.
Echoing the anxiety many women feel after a loss, she told the host, “I didn’t want to talk about it because I was just really nervous, and I have had a miscarriage before.”
Five years after her first loss, she started therapy, which she admitted was “uncomfortable and painful.”

Queen Bey herself has opened up about her miscarriages a few times. And so has Jay-Z, rapping in his song Glory, “Last time the miscarriage was so tragic/We was afraid you’d disappear/But nah baby you magic.”
Beyonce described miscarriage as, “the saddest thing I’ve ever been through.” She said that having miscarriages taught her that she needed to learn how to “mother herself” first.
Like Pink, she shared that her previous loss made her rethink sharing her next one. “You don’t know what’s going to happen. And that was hard, because all of my family and my friends knew and we celebrated. It was hard.”
She says recording in the studio after her miscarriage was her best form of therapy.
#5 Halsey
Singer Halsey revealed in 2018 that she realized she was having a miscarriage on stage. She said she realized she was pregnant while on tour, and before having time to decide what it meant to her, she was already having a miscarriage.
“I beat myself up for it because I think that the reason it happened is just the lifestyle I was living,” she said. Although she wasn’t drinking or doing drugs, she blamed overwork, which sent her to the hospital every few weeks.
The then 23-year-old also shared she’d be freezing her eggs to protect her fertility. Halsey has endometriosis, which can cause infertility, amongst other issues.
#6 Courtney Cox
Courtney Cox’s character on Friends, Monica, also struggled with fertility issues. In real life, the actress said although she gets pregnant easily, she has “a hard time keeping them.” She had seven miscarriages and was later diagnosed with a gene mutation that heightens her risk of blood clots.
While filming the scene where Rachel gives birth, Courtney had just experienced a miscarriage.
“It was like that same time. Oh, my God, it was terrible having to be funny,” she said.
Despite her troubles, she gave birth to her daughter in 2004.
#7 Whitney Houston
The late Whitney Houston told Barbara Walters in a 1993 interview that she had a miscarriage while filming “The Bodyguard.”
“It was a bit painful, emotionally and physically. It was something I would have liked to have said myself but they didn’t give me the opportunity. I was back on the set the next day.”
Later, she gave birth to her daughter. Then, in the summer of 1993, she announced she was pregnant again. Days later, she had a miscarriage.

Sending love to the woman who started it all! Happy birthday, Barbara Walters!
Journalist Barbara Walters discussed her miscarriages in a tense conversation on the talk show The View in 2011.
During the show, she was interviewing author Joe McGinniss when he began questioning her: “Barbara, you’ve been pregnant, haven’t you?” he asked. “You’ve been in labor.”
“Do you want to get into my life?” she asked back. She went on to say, “just because you’ve brought it up, I’ve had three miscarriages but I know what it’s like to be pregnant.”
Prior to this interview, she shared that she never reported her losses. Instead, she’d take a few days off and then head back to work.
Walters ended up adopting her daughter, who she said, “made her life complete.”

Comedian and star of the movie Always Be My Maybe turned her experience with miscarriage into a comedy routine. She said talking to others who’ve been through the same thing helped her overcome her own grief and she wants to help others by doing something similar.
“It’s one thing to hear the statistics but it’s another to put faces to the numbers so you stop feeling like it’s your fault.”
Like many women, Ali says she worried that the miscarriage was her fault.
“I remember I worried what my in-laws would think, which is so crazy. I thought they’d think their son had married a terrible person.”
#10 Mariah Carey
In 2010, singer Mariah Carey told Access Hollywood that her first pregnancy ended in a miscarriage.
“It kind of shook us both and took us into a place that was really dark and difficult,” she recalled.
Some celebrities turn to social media to open up about their loss. But according to Mariah, it was too painful to talk about.
She later revealed that she was pressured into admitting she was pregnant on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. She said the host made her feel extremely uncomfortable because she had a prior miscarriage and didn’t want to reveal the good news just in case. Soon after the interview, she miscarried.
Mariah went on to give birth to twins.
