As a pregnant mother, you will need to keep a few tools in your arsenal on your journey to motherhood and what an arduous, but rewarding journey it is. One of these tools, which you may have already heard of, is the fetal doppler: a device that allows you to listen to your baby’s heartbeat after about 10-12 weeks of pregnancy. What you may not have heard of is that you can actually record the sound of your baby’s heart beating. In fact, you could even share it with your loved ones using a smartphone (although be considerate as there is such a thing as oversharing, otherwise your Aunt Agnes might unfriend you on facebook). Anyways, certain devices even let you record the sound and let you listen to it as many times as you want. When I first got it, I couldn’t stop listening; it was like a song that I wanted to play over and over again. Nowadays, there is a whole range of fetal dopplers to choose from based on your budget. To help you find the right fetal doppler, I made a little chart for you here. It shows what fetal dopplers are out there as well as their most distinguishing features.
As you can see from the chart, the fetal dopplers can be divided into the following categories:
Affordable Fetal Doppler
These fetal dopplers are the most basic devices that come with a built-in speaker along with headphones. You can use them to hear your baby’s heartbeat by applying a generous amount of ultrasound gel on your belly and gently moving the probe over it until you are able to hear the rapid beating sound of the baby’s heart. Baby Sound A and Baby Sound B are two of the most popular products under this category. If you are just happy with hearing your baby’s heartbeat, then these are for you.
Most Popular
The second category is based on the most popular choice for fetal dopplers on the internet- Sonoline A, B and C. These devices come with a little more features than the Baby Sound A and B. In addition to the built-in speaker, they have an LCD screen and real-time fetal heart rate monitor. You can hear as well as see the heart rate of your baby on the screen. They use a 3 MHz probe which can detect even faint heartbeats. It can provide constant reassurance of your baby’s health so you never have to worry.

High-End
With the high-end fetal dopplers, you get even more bang for your buck. One of the dopplers, the Dodobeat fetal Doppler, is an excellent choice for those who want to use their smartphone to connect with their baby figuratively speaking. Charged using a usb charger, you can use it as a stand-alone device with an earphone or connect it to your android phone or iPhone to hear the heartbeat. By downloading the app, you can record, capture, and share the heartbeat with family and friends or even your boss (just kidding don’t do that, trust me that does not go down well).
Hi Bebe Pro is another device which has an LCD screen with a real-time fetal heart rate monitor to capture the heartbeat on the screen. Seriously, there’s something mesmerizing about seeing your child’s heart rate in real time.
Advanced Fetal Dopplers
If the high-end fetal dopplers is analogous to a calculator then the advanced fetal dopplers are like computers. These fetal dopplers are most popular with the hospitals and midwives. They are made from a durable material that is perfect for use in hospitals and clinics. Edan Sonotrax, Jumper and VComin B are some of the fetal dopplers that fall into this category. The Edan Sonotrax is the doctor’s most popular choice as in addition to having an LCD screen, real-time fetal heart rate monitor, it also has a waterproof probe and a built-in audio recording mechanism. You can record your baby’s heartbeat using an audio recording cable and store it on your computer. The waterproof 3MHz probe comes in handy to detect the faintest of heartbeats. It is also more durable than other probes in their normal everyday use.
All of these devices are available on Baby Doppler. Tell us what you think about the different types of fetal dopplers as well as which one is your favorite in the comments section below.
